Kansas City sports anniversaries in 2023

Kansas City has some pretty special anniversaries to remember in 2023. A total of 15 championships will be celebrated while other anniversaries remembered include the opening of a couple historical sites and special moments.

September 20, 1898 — Blues win Western League title — 125 Years

Kansas City Blues collect another Western league championship under manager Jim Manning. The Kansas City Star reported that the Blues drew an attendance of 22,219 in their final three-game series with Indianapolis and fans stormed the field after the final out.

July 2, 1918 — Blues win first Double-A title – 105 Years

War causes American Association to postpone the remainder of the season, resulting in the Blues claiming their first league title since moving to Double-A in 1908. The Blues finished the season with a record of 43-30 and a league-low 248 runs allowed under manager John Ganzel.

July 3, 1923 — Historic Muehlbach Field opens – 100 Years

Before being known as Municipal Stadium, Muehlbach Field was among the top minor league baseball stadiums. The Blues opened the stadium, which sat at 22nd and Brooklyn in Kansas City, Missouri, with a 10-7 win over the Milwaukee Home Brews. The Monarchs soon followed in making Muehlbach their home field in 1923.

September 9, 1923 — Monarchs clinch first pennant – 100 Years

The Monarchs clinched their first of 10 Negro League pennants on September 9, 1923 in game one of a doubleheader against the Indianapolis ABCs at Muehlebach Field. Bill “Plunk” Drake threw a complete game as the Monarchs won 9-3 before a narrow 4-3 win later that day. The Monarchs finished the season with a record of 61-37 and Oscar Johnson won the league’s Triple Crown with a .406 batting average, 20 home runs and 120 RBIs.

October 25, 1923 — Blues win Little World Series title – 100 Years

The Kansas City Blues win their first Little World Series championship after beating the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 in game nine. This competition crowned the Blues as the best minor league team in baseball.

March 27, 1933 — Pla-Mors win hockey championship – 90 Years

The Kansas City Pla-Mors beat the St. Louis Flyers 1-0 in the championship game to win the organization’s second championship in the American Hockey Association. The Pla-Mors narrowly claimed the regular season crown with 25 wins, 20 losses and a tie before winning the championship with three wins and a loss in the playoffs.

May 7, 1938 — Lawrin wins Kentucky Derby – 85 Years

Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Arcaro leads Lawrin to Kentucky Derby win at Churchill Downs. Parnell, Missouri native Ben Jones trained Lawrin on Woolford Farm in Prarie Village, Kansas. This was the first of six horses Jones trained to win a Kentucky Derby over the course of 14 years.

October 8, 1938 — Blues win Junior World Series title – 85 Years

The Blues were crowned as the greatest minor league team for the third time in club history after beating the Newark Bears in the Junior World Series 4-3. With a game seven win over the St. Paul Saints, the Kansas City Blues win their first American Association championship since joining the New York Yankees farm system in 1936.

September 30, 1953 — Blues win final league title – 70 Years

The Blues beat the Toledo Sox 4-1 in game seven of the American Association championship series. Finishing with a regular season record of 88-66 under manager Harry Craft, this proved to be the last championship in Blues history. Vic Power led the league with a .349 batting average and 237 hits.

May 22, 1963 — Chiefs move to Kansas City – 60 Years

The AFL champion Dallas Texans finalize and announce the relocation of the franchise to Kansas City, renamed to the Chiefs on May 26, 1963. While the Texans struggled in competition with the Dallas Cowboys, it is safe to say that the franchise’s relocation to Kansas City was a success.

July 4, 1968 — Pelé plays in Kansas City – 55 Years

Arguably the greatest soccer player of all time, Pelé contributed a goal and two assists as his Brazilian club Santos FC defeated the Kansas City Spurs 4-1 in an exhibition at Municipal Stadium. A crowd of 19,296 was one of the largest crowds the Spurs ever had.

April 10, 1973 — Truman Sports Complex is completed – 50 Years

After Arrowhead Stadium opened in 1972, Royals Stadium opens for more than 39,000 fans to watch the Royals defeat the Texas Rangers 12-1. This signaled the completion of the Truman Sports Complex.

July 17, 1983 — tom Watson wins The Open for final time – 40 Years

Kansas City native Tom Watson wins his final major championship at the 1983 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. Watson finished with a -9 score, beating Andy Bean and Hale Irwin by one stroke. It was Watson’s fifth and final win at The Open.

July 24, 1983 — George Brett’s Pine Tar Incident – 40 Years

The signature moment of George Brett’s career with the Kansas City Royals. After hitting a home run to put the Royals ahead 5-4 at Yankee Stadium in the top of the ninth inning with two outs, Brett’s two-run home run was disallowed because the umpires ruled he had too much pine tar. Once the ruling was made, Brett sprinted out of the dugout and had to be restrained by multiple umpires. The ruling meant the Royals lost, but the league overturned the ruling upon protest, resulting in the remainder of the game being played on August 18 with the Royals holding on to win it 5-4.

April 4, 1988 — Kansas wins NCAA Tournament at Kemper – 35 Years

Danny Manning and the Kansas Jayhawks win the NCAA basketball championship with 83-79 win over Oklahoma at Kemper Arena. The No. 6-seeded Jayhawks upset the top-seeded Sooner behind a 31-point performance from Manning.

April 30, 1993 — Attack win NPSL championship – 30 Years

The Attack win Kansas City’s first indoor soccer championship. The Attack beat the Cleveland Crunch 19-7 in game five to take the NPSL championship series 3-2.

Jan. 17, 2003 — Kansas City hosts MLS SuperDraft – 20 Years

Kansas City Convention Center hosts the fifth annual MLS SuperDraft. DC United took Alecko Eskandarian with the first overall pick. The Wizards selected Jack Jewsbury in the fourth round with the 43rd overall pick.

April 7, 2008 — Kansas wins basketball championship – 15 Years

Mario’s Miracle is among the most memorable moments in college basketball history. With Kansas trailing to Memphis 63-60 in the national championship game, Mario Chalmers knocked down a game-tying three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left. Kansas road that wave of momentum in overtime as they won their third national title with a final score of 75-68.

Sept. 16, 2008 — T-Bones win first championship – 15 Years

The Kansas City T-Bones won their first championship in 2008 with a 5-3 win on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, defeating the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the Northern League championship series 3-1. Despite finishing the regular season fourth of six teams, the T-Bones went 6-1 in the playoffs to take the title.

Dec. 7, 2013 — Sporting KC wins 2013 MLS Cup – 10 Years

Sporting KC won its first MLS Cup title since the club’s 2011 rebrand. After going down 1-0 against Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup Final, defender Aurelien Collin connected his head on the end of a corner kick to equalize. With temperatures as low as 20 degrees at Sporting Park, Sporting won the coldest MLS Cup Final ever after beating RSL 7-6 in a penalty shootout.

September 15, 2018 — T-Bones win another title – 5 Years

The Kansas City T-Bones came back from a two-run deficit to beat the St. Paul Saints 5-3 in game four to take the 2018 American Association championship at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kansas. This championship came one day shy of the 10-year anniversary of their first title.
